March 28th Resource Fair Reaches Out to Local Hispanic Community

As a participant in the following event,  the Southwest Utah Public Health Department is submitting this news release on behalf of the LDS Southern Utah Public Affairs Council. Please contact Waldo Galan, Council member, at (435) 592-4116 with questions.

CEDAR CITY, UT - The Southern Utah Public Affairs Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has organized a Hispanic Community Information and Resource Fair to be held on Saturday, March 28th at the Cedar High School campus, from 1:00 to 4:00pm.

“We are very excited to be able to be the key sponsor for this event," says Waldo D. Galan, council member. "We are looking to provide information and resources to the Hispanic community in the areas of medical services, employment, housing, food and clothing, as well as education opportunities;  from how to enroll  children in school  to English as a Second Language through educational institutions. We are also having several bank representatives who will present their plans for small business financing as well as “how-to” skills. In addition, we will hold two 30-minute discussions  (at 2:00pm and 3:00pm) on immigration reform and current law.

The fair has received the support of the Cedar City Mayor’s Office along with many other institutions that have agreed to participate in this outreach effort.

“We want to emphasize that this is not an LDS Church program," says Dixie Leavitt, also a council member. " It is sponsored by us, yes, but it is a collaborative effort from individuals and institutions in the community who are seeking to improve the living conditions of this important segment of the population, as well as to make them aware of the resources that are available to all. Our aim is to improve their lives, regardless of their current condition."

Participants in this event include Intermountain Healthcare,  Cedar City Band of Paiutes Clinic,  Catholic Charities, Iron County Care and Share , Wells Fargo Bank , Zion’s Bank, State Bank of Southern Utah , Cedar City Housing Authority , Centro De La Familia de Utah , Workforce Services,  Deseret Industries , Iron County School District, LDS Employment Services , Southern Utah University through their Latino Center and  Small Business Development Center, and many others.
“We hope that all members of the Hispanic community will feel that this is an event they won't want to miss," adds council member Stan Shakespeare. "It is designed to support, instruct and help everyone in this important segment of our economy and population."
